Public schools in the Chico Unified School District are controlled by the CUSD Board of Education CUSD provides K-12 education for citizens of Chico and surrounding areas. Grade schools are split up into elementary (K-6), Junior High (7-8), and High School (9-12). Hooker Oak School, however, is an exception as it includes both elementary and junior high grades. For parents looking for something innovative and different, there are a few charter schools to choose form. The Blue Oak Charter School offers a Waldorf approach towards educating the whole child and serves grades Kindergarten through junior high. For parents that prefer their kids attend private schools, there are several of those in Chico. Most are religious in nature. Many students that graduate from Chico's schools begin their college career by attending state-funded Chico State or Butte College. There are other opportunities for education at several for-profit institutions.
