I grew up in Southern California and went to school at UC Davis. The Daviswiki was so helpful for me being new to the area, that now that the Chicowiki has gotten started, I want to try and update what I know about Chico for the future people of Chico. I know how great this resource can be and I hope others are helping to update this site as well.
I enjoy geocaching, baseball (GO DODGERS!) and for anyone who is interested in starting a new softball team (or just need a member or two) let me know!

2009-05-02 14:23:40 Hi John! Glad to have you join us! Very good recent edits. The only thing that I have to point out is that there are copyright issues linking directly to other people's photography unless they are licensed under the Creative Commons. It's also best to upload images to the wiki and make them thumbnails so that text wraps around the images. This also prevents images from being "lost" if the website that hosts them removes the images. It's best really to use your own photography to avoid licensing issues.and broken images. I hope this doesn't turn you off to editing, it's just a sad reality of the world's copyright system. Editors might remove any images that are not verifiably compatible with creative commons. 2009-05-02 16:01:34 I went ahead and thumbnailed what you uploaded — glad to know that they are yours! Awesome pictures. But I had to remove the links to those various sites. The wiki needs permission to use their photographs, although Wikipedia seems to think that thumbnails are fair-use. It's not very cut and dry so editors err on the side of caution. 2009-05-03 12:23:41 Hey John! Ryan beat me to it, but thanks for the awesome work on the wiki the last few days! I too came over to Chico Wiki after seeing what a great resource Davis Wiki is. I just sort of did it backwards from you: I moved from Chico to Davis, and after discovering Davis Wiki, found my way over here about a year and a half ago. I am in Chico every few weeks/months to visit family, but mostly just write from memory and take good notes when I am at home. We are a very small group of regular editors right now, and it's great to have someone else on board who knows what an amazing resource a wiki can be for a community. We need all the help we can get, so hopefully you'll have a lot to share about Chico! —StaceyEllis
2009-05-06 21:38:49 Davis is...surprisingly similar to Chico, actually. Not just having a wiki, of course! College towns all have a certain feeling to them, I've found. I am enjoying it, and UCD is surprisingly better than I expected. I did my undergrad at Humboldt State, so I was accustomed to more one-on-one interaction with profs, but other than that, it's all good here. It's surprising that you've never met a geography grad student, we are one of the larger groups (90+ of us). I guess it all depends on what circles you run around in. —StaceyEllis
2009-05-10 14:00:29 Geography was actually housed in Walker Hall up until this year. That usually gets me looks of "Someone actually uses that building???" when I tell people. We are this weird "graduate group" without an undergrad program (they quit offering undergrad classes a few years ago), so we are basically just existing in borrowed space from Landscape Architecture since we don't have a "department" for the administration to find a reason to formally house. Just this year we moved over to Hunt Hall, which is a step up and, lucky for me, has a GIS lab on the second floor and is next door to a main GIS lab on campus. I'm sort of glad we aren't in the Death Star, since I've been lost in that building on more than one occasion! It's really great for a game of hide and seek or sardines after hours, though. Right now I'm happily living over at the Atriums Apartments. Can't beat the price and location, and it's only for grad students, so the noise level stays pretty low. If I should find myself looking to move anytime in my adventures in Davis, I'll keep you in mind for questions. How long have you been in Chico? Growing up there, I know quite a lot of obscure stuff about the town, so feel free to direct any questions you might come up with my way. —StaceyEllis
2009-05-12 14:00:05 Yeah, I think I got a little carried away. It just frustrated me when I saw there were only two things on the board when I know there's a ton of stuff going on in town. After I grumbled to myself "Why won't anyone add anything to this?" I realized that I was just as guilty since I hadn't added anything in months. Now, at least, if we all totally neglect it all summer, there will still be some things listed on it. What we really need to do is get the local bands to post their own shows on here since I can't possibly keep up with the huge music scene in town, but I have yet to figure out how to reach out to them. —StaceyEllis

I just wanted to let you know that it's completely okay to upload larger photos — that way there's more detail when someone clicks a thumbnail. I usually resize a large digital photo to 800x600 pixels and compressed by 25-20% (JPEG) for smaller file size. —RyanMikulovsky
2009-05-14 18:12:57 It lags a little on removing the old events for some reason, but it will clear itself out in a day or two. I am not sure if it holds onto them to remind people of what they missed, or if it's some sort of bug on Wiki Spot. We don't have to worry about keeping up on clearing out old events, thankfully. Imagine what a pain that would become, especially after I decided to go crazy with posting the other day! —StaceyEllis

2009-05-14 19:16:24 I actually enjoy gnoming, and have to be really inspired to create brand new content. Generally when I start on writing pages, it happens in large quantities all at once, then I go dormant for a few weeks. More than anything I tend to just watch recent changes for stuff to fix and chime in on discussions. When I first started working on this wiki a year and a half ago, I was really excited to write about everything I knew. Back then the content was really sparse, so I had a ton to write about. Perhaps I've exhausted my supply of Chico knowledge. Nah, I've probably just gotten lazy... —StaceyEllis
2009-05-16 14:32:33 Actually, ["Owned Article"] was correct. I completely spaced on whether or not I was supposed to include that page too.. and it didn't look right when I did. So using that above will show up on the Owned Article page for future gnoming. I had completely forgot about that. And yes, we'll have to share our experiences with those wild geology profs some time ;-) I absolutely love California.. so many unique geologic formations! It's one of the few places in the world where serpentine is in abundance. —RyanMikulovsky
2009-05-18 10:45:28 Hmm. I have no recollection of the Orland Fires :-\ I did work two fires over the last summer so perhaps I missed it. I tried to track down what fires were near Orland but couldn't locate them from various maps. Closest I got were the Whiskey Fire, the Walker Fire, and the Mendocino Lightning Complex. —RyanMikulovsky
2009-05-18 11:00:36 Okay — that makes sense. In terms of scale I probably didn't think much of them which would explain why I don't remember the fires. But sure enough, with enough googling there are tiny snippets saying at least 3 homes were burned down and HWY 32 was closed for a short while. Thanks! —RyanMikulovsky
2009-05-19 10:58:44 Cool; there are a lot of little things like that which beat the pants off of writing about businesses. I think the wiki has an unhealthy ratio of businesses to the little things that everyone (the poor, the ascetic, etc) can enjoy. Things like culture and the outdoors. Not all life in Chico revolves around business activity — I hope! That said I'm very happy with your Seasonal pages! —RyanMikulovsky
2009-05-19 15:06:06 Hey John! Isn't it awesome when you learn how to do something new on the wiki? Nice banner across the top of your page! Anyhow, a couple of cool hints that might help you out: 1) Among the buttons at the top of the page when you are editing is one that looks like a name tag with "ME" written on it. If you click that, it'll sign your name for you, rather than you having to do the markup for ["Users/JohnNash"]. I invariably forget some stray " or ] in there, so I find that super helpful. 2) You can do a cool interwiki link to Davis Wiki rather than just the URL if you want. [wiki:davis] will get you davis. If you want to be more specific, you can do [wiki:davis Davis Wiki] to get Davis Wiki or even link to you a specific page such as [wiki:davis:"Users/JohnNash"] forUsers/JohnNash or [wiki:davis:"Users/JohnNash" John's Davis Page] for John's Davis Page. 2009-05-20 21:35:50 Well, the comments by that user didn't fail my spam test. I think I deleted that user's most recent comment. But for some reason the other ones I kept. Perhaps because I figured that through all that incredibly, disastrously, broken English, somehow they might have been constructive comments. At least, to the poster. I won't blink if someone nukes them. I might even do that because they kind of degrade the wiki. I just have to wonder why bother trying if your English is that bad? —RyanMikulovsky

If you want to add or take away anything, feel free, since you had the idea in the first place. 2009-06-12 13:40:45 Yes, these recent edits certainly help the case against anonymous edits. It has been a problem across wikispot wikis with anonymous edits enabled — this could just be the front of the storm. Since we had a huge discussion about it I don't know what else is to be said besides most are for removing anon editing. So perhaps it will happen very soon.
