The Name

Cabrillo College is named for Jao Cabrillo, an explorer working for Spain.  Although working for Spain, he was Portuguese.  Thus, "Cabrillo" has the "L" sound and not a "y" sound if it were Spanish. According to legend, the name for the college was suggested by Wally Trabling, a newspaper writer.
