Baptists are admitted to their churches by being baptised after professing their faith in the church. Baptist churches are all independently governed, so although some of them join associations of Baptist churches, these associations have no direct authority over the churches.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest association of Baptist churches in the world, and also the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. It has a history of promoting racism and slavery, although in 1995, it voted to adopt a resolution renouncing its racist roots and apologizing for its past defense of slavery.

The Southern Baptist Convention does not support the ordination of any women; however, some churches that are members of it have ordained women. These churches have sometimes been punished by being excluded from membership in their local associations of Baptist churches or expelled from their state conventions. It also does not support the ordination of gay men, and does not perform same-sex marriages. Since the early 1970s, it has preached that marriage must consist of a subservient woman and a dominant man. It compares the roles of a wife and a husband, respectively, to the roles of the church and God, saying that a wife should "submit to" (and worship) a husband as the church submits to and worships God, while a husband should "protect" (but not worship) a wife as God protects but does not worship the church. It also opposes even secular governmental recognition of same-sex marriages.

As of a 2007 estimate, 8.6% of Yuba County residents and 5.4% of Sutter County residents belonged to the Southern Baptist Convention.
