Sometimes one has to leave Aachen behind for a couple of hours or days to get a nice break from studying.

Below are a couple of possibilities for trips.

Near Aachen

  • Vaals: A little town right across the Dutch border. French fries are good and unlike in Germany, supermarkets are open on Sundays (look for the Albert Heijn)
  • Dreiländereck: Aachen is located right at the Duch/Belgien border. There is some nice hiking trails just at the corner, where the three countries meet.
  • Vennbahn Radweg: A bicycle route starting in Aachen and going all the way down to Luxembourg.

Northrhine-Westphalia

With the Semesterticket, students of the RWTH and FH Aachen can use all the regional trains and public transportation in NRW for free. This makes travelling the most populated and very diverse state of Germany even more attractive.

  • Köln (Cologne): Germany's fourth largest city and and famous for its black cathedral right at the train station. Home of the Kölsch, one of the lightest beers in Germany. Trains to Köln leave regularly at Aachen Hauptbahnhof.
  • Düsseldorf
  • Essen
  • Bonn: Former capital of Germany is now home to many museums.
  • Bochum: One of the former industrial cities of Germany
  • Münster: Even though it is a little far, beautiful Münster with its university and nice old city are worth a visit.
