The Cowell family of Balhannah

James Cowell and his wife, Eliza Hammond nee CANDLER/CAULDER, emigrated as a young married couple to SA aboard the Louisa Baillie in 1849. Schoolteacher at Clarendon and then Norwood. Two sons born in SA – Henry James Cowell b 28/3/1855 Clarendon d 18/2/1935 Lockleys and James William Cowell b 5/11/1856 Clarendon d 10/2/1910 Clarendon (of Medindie).

HJ Cowell became a timber merchant at Norwood in 1876, and his brother joined him in 1880, henceforth trading as Cowell Bros. HJ Cowell then retired from the business, and practised as an architect at 6 Australasian Chambers King William St Adelaide from 1888, and lived at Willowwy Lockleys. He died 18/2/1935 Lockleys.

JH Cowell continued to manage Cowell Brothers at 45 The Parade Norwood – timber merchants and general ironmongers, steam saw and moulding mills - the original site on the corner of The Parade and Sydenham Road, and also at Beyer St at Norwood, with further expansion to Adelaide (corner of Victoria Square and Grote St), and New Dock Pt Adelaide. About the end of the 1890s, he took his family to live at The Briars Hawker Road Medindie (purchased from Hon GC Hawker), where his youngest child, Geoffrey Reginald Cowell, was born in 1901. Because his health became so poor, JW Cowell sold the business to his son, FH Cowell, in 1905, who subsequently turned the firm into a company – Cowell Bros & Co.
