Apologies

Graham Woolford, Russell Grivell

Visitor: Mr John Carrangis, Environmental Health Practitioner (DCMB)

Phil Houston welcomed John Carrangis and asked Eric Aliffe, as a member of the Toilet Sub-Committee, to explain the history of Hahndorf’s complaints to Council regarding the toilet situation and what the HCA felt was needed to make them suitable for use by both national and international tourists. Eric also explained that the toilets are extremely basic and it was becoming a matter of hygiene. It is important to have an image of bright, welcoming toilets and the current standards certainly need raising.

John Carrangis said he was heartened by the group showing such an interest in improving things within the town and all the correspondence was greatly appreciated. He further explained that Council had a budget of $100,000 per year to cover the maintenance of 31 public toilets throughout the council area and it was difficult to supply bright, light and welcoming toilets within that budget. Margaret said she felt it was more important to upgrade the toilets to an excellent degree for tourists etc FIRST and let the maintenance come later – better facilities would result in more respect from the public. John took note of many of the requirements made by the HCA and said he would do what he could to improve the situation. It was also suggested that the IGA toilets need a sign stating “Please ask for the key”.

Phil H thanked John for attending the meeting and looked forward to seeing some further results regarding upgrading of the public toilets.

Lita Los Angeles joined the meeting.

Minutes of Previous Meeting

moved Mike Hasler/seconded David Haines, that the minutes be approved – carried.

Business Arising

Horse and Waggon:

no further discussion was necessary at this time.

Walking Trail signage etc:

Eric suggested that HCA either do something with the money in its account or pass on the funds to perhaps the National Trust as a contribution to deal with this.
Margaret advised that someone within Hahndorf had offered to fund a substantial memorial to the pioneers. However, Lita was adamant that the memorial should remain with the “women” pioneers and she suggested that she could contact various women’s organisations to see what other funds she could procure.
It was agreed that she should report her findings to the September Meeting.

September Agenda Action: Lita

    Off-Street Parking – Pine Avenue:

Phil reported that he had examined all the roads off Main Street, access from some appearing to be quite dangerous. He felt that if selected car parking space on Main Street be removed this would improve access visibility and safety but would also need policing.
IGA area — should remove all parking either side of entrance and opposite entrance on Main Street which would result in car parking to the rear being utilised and access would be safer onto Main Street. It was suggested that better signage be provided for the Carl Nitschke Carpark at the other end of town as it was not always fully utilised.

It was agreed that Off-Street Parking on Main Street be an agenda item in August. August Agenda

Purchase of Laptop for Village Voice:

Wendy advised that the laptop had been purchased and worked well for Village Voice. Ann Haines had purchased the original laptop which was unsuitable for Village Voice for $150.00.

    Name Change:

David H said the Main Street should be called “Main Street”. Wendy had talked to John in the Post Office and was referred to Greg Rogers of the Traders Association. Greg had supplied a copy of a letter written to all Traders regarding their wishes regarding the name. He had received only 6 out of 125 traders’ responses; however, the traders have a meeting on Friday and he will advise further as to what is suggested. It would then be prudent for a letter to be forwarded to State and Local Governments etc with a request for the street to be officially known as “Main Street”. Wendy to follow up and draft up a suitable letter.
