Produce and goods sold include fresh Coorong mullet (in season), local honey, fruit and vegetables, homemade cakes, jams & pickles, new and used tools, a huge variety of books, chocolates, greeting cards, jewellery, gardeners delight of plants, large white elephant stall, and variety of handicafts.
Added to the above is the sumptuous morning teas of fresh baked scones with jam/cream and tea/coffee. A sausages sizzle is also available. The ever popular "potato fritter" is available at each market.
Tourist buses are always welcome to use the Market as a point of call on their Saturday tours.
Review/s
The Random Shopper - Ann Haines, Jeremy Roberts & Julie Altman: (Extract fromHahndorf Village Voice, Spring Issue No 35, 2013)
As the sun starts to rise over Hahndorf on the 4th Saturday of every month (except December), there is action at the St. Michaels Lutheran Church Car Park. The monthly market has begun and is a hive of activity. There are stall holders who have come from various areas, travelling up to an hour (potato
to be present for the day’s activities. The official opening time of the market is 8.30am to 1pm.
The Hahndorf Community Market has been operating from St. Michael’s carpark at the corner of Balhannah Road and Church Street since 2001. It was initially started by a group of dedicated members (called “The Flamingos”), who were fundraising to help pay for a block of land in Hahndorf (The Saw Mill
Block) purchased by the Church.
The market has grown over the years with many stall holders passing through the gates. There are regular patrons both young and old around the district, as well as the ever present tourists, who come to the market to find bargains, enjoy coffee and scones and interact with others within our community. It’s great to see people sitting around having a chat together.
At the market we have a diverse group of stall holders selling some high quality goods. Some of the products sold are jewellery, a variety of house plants, designer cupcakes, wine with tasting available, handspun woollen items, dried fruit, chocolates and much more, so come and have a browse. We are always looking for stallholders with something unique to sell.
Most months we also sell pre-ordered fresh Coorong Mullet, provided they are being caught by our award winning fisherman, Glenn Hill, at Wild Coorong Seafood (http://www.coorongwildseafood.com.au).
So come along and support a local event, meet the locals over scones, coffee, BBQ and, of course, our famous and delicious Kartoffelpuffers (potato pancakes). If you have not tasted these before, it is definitely a must.
