Little factual information is available on Christoph and Elisabeth.  Pastor IWAN in his books on emigration of Germans in the 1800's states that they came from the village of Schoenborn.  Christoph's occupation was given as "haüsler", that is, a cottager.

On his death certificate his occupation is shepherd.  In Australia his name is generally associated with that of his son Christoph.  In several early documents of 1839 and 1840 the two names follow

each other. It appears that Christoph was skilled in certain aspects of medical practice and passed on a certain amount of this knowledge, Christoph LIEBELT from Friedrichstadt recalled that his grandfather set his broken thigh. Others recall that this younger Christoph also possessed a certain amount of medical knowledge. Christoph senior also practised blood-letting.  As doctors were few and far between in the early days it was necessary for a number of members of the community to have basic medical knowledge.  Pastor STREMPEL in later years, possessed considerable skills in homeopathic medicines.

Johann Christoph passed away at Hahndorf on October 21, 1846, at the age of 71 years.  The cause of death was given as natural decay.  The death was notified by Johann Gottlob SEELÄNDER the schoolteacher in Hahndorf at the time.  Anna Elisabeth lived on for a little over 10 years.  Her death came at 11.15pm on the evening of January 27, 1857.

She was buried the cemetery at St Michael's Church, Hahndorf, two days later by Pastor a. STREMPEL.  She last received Holy Communion on January 8.  We presume that Christoph was also buried in the same cemetery.  The positions of the graves are not known.  At her death there was doubt about the exact age of Elisabeth - her age was given as not less than 87 years 10 months.

LIEBELT Family History:    In 1838, 40 year old Maria Elizabeth KUCHEL [b1798] and her husband Johann 'Christian' LIEBELT  [b1801] were living in the small Prussian, Brandenburg village of Nickern, with all of their 3 children, aged 14, 12 and 5 years. Christian's younger brother Johann 'Christoph' LIEBELT [b1805] and his wife Anna WOLF  [b1808] lived in the same village with their 3 children aged 7, 4 and 1 year old.

Christian's older brother Johann 'Gottfried' LIEBELT [b1798] his wife Anna POHL [b1799], and their 3 children aged 14, 5 and 3 years lived in a village 2.3 kms to the east, called Schönborn. This village was also where Christian, Christoph and Gottfried's  parents lived:  Johann 'Christoph' LIEBELT [b1775] senior and his wife Anna Elisabeth STEINBORN [b1769].   In 1838, when all of these LIEBELT's above, came to South Australia, the parents were aged 62 and 68 years of age

Maria Elizabeth KUCHEL [b1878], and her sister Johanne 'Dorothea' Elizabeth KUCHEL [b1811] were possibly born in the village of Lochow, just over 3kms, S.E. from Nickern, where their father, Daniel KUCHEL lived.   Daniel's wife has not yet been identified.

Where did they settle in Hahndorf?      64 Main St, Hahndorf.

Map left of Hahndorf and this extract was published by E.A. WITTWER, in April 1983:  "The original Hahndorf settlement was situated on the north-eastern side of the Main Street stretching from the northern boundary to Windsor Avenue and east to the Golf Course.  The town land was subdivided into numerous blocks.  These allotments were classified into house and land (or farm) blocks. the position of the house blocks is shown on the map.  They were numbered from 1 to 54.  Each family was allocated a house allotment (usually about an acre in area) and several land allotments which were scattered throughout the village.  Thus each family had a total allocation of about 4 acres".

In this extract from EA WITTWER under 'Pioneers of Hahndorf 1839', Alan WITTWER has given more detailed information about which Prussians shared their home blocks with which family members.  Here he states that the 3rd son was provided with a home block at what is now No 64 Main Street, and with him & his wife Anna Dorothea (born WOLF) their 3 eldest children, all born in Prussia, as well as Christoph's  'parents Johann Christoph (senior) and Anna Elisabeth (born STEINBORN).

Family History by F. LIEBELT & E.A. WITTWER
Extract page 44

Johann Christian was born on February 2, 1801.  The place of his birth is not known although it seems likely that it was either Nickern or Schoenborn in the Province of Brandenburg.  Little is known of his life in Germany except that at the time of registration for emigration his place of residence was the village of Nickern and that his occupation was "Schäfer" (Shepherd).  In Australia he was known as "Schäfer" LIEBELT'.

Christian married Maria Elisabeth KUCHEL, the daughter of Daniel KUCHEL who lived in the village of Lochow.  We know  of three children born to this marriage - Johann Gottlieb, Johann Christoph and Johanne Eleonore were all born in Germany and emigrated to Australia with their parents on the "Zebra" in 1838.

Christian and his family were among the pioneer settlers in Hahndorf.  Christian was allocated approx. 4 1/4 acres of land in the new village.  homestead block was numbered 15 (now 19).  The block was near the northern end of the Main Street (no 106). In addition he received farming blocks numbered 21,25,36, 51c and 66b. (Now 59, 63, 86, 105 and 138).  On September 16, Christian became the registered owner of this land; previously it had been vested in the original trustees of Hahndorf, Christian and Johann Christian Erdmann JAENSCH.

Christian built his humble home of wattle and daub on this property.  It consisted of two rooms and a porch.  In addition, a cellar of similar construction was built somewhat removed from the house.  Portion of this cellar still stands.  In the door of the old homestead was a spear mark where a spear struck into the door after an aboriginal had thrown it at Maria Elisabeth as she fled into the house.  She only just made it to safety.

In 1843 Christian had 3 acres of wheat under cultivation as well as 1/2 acre of potatoes.  He owned 6 cattle and 2 pigs.  After their marriage his two sons left the Hahndorf township and took up land at Friedrichstadt.  His daughter Eleonore and her husband Carl FAEHRMANN lived on the old homestead.

Originally Christian and his family were members of Pastor Kavel's congregation but in 1851 they joined Pastor FRITZSCHE's congregation. Christian passed away on October 4, 1858. It appears that he died fairly suddenly as his will, made in German, was only witnessed on October 2 of that year; the witnesses to the will were his sons Gottlieb and Christoph and Reinder van der MOLEN. An English translation (by Dr. HÜBBE, the Court Interpreter) is available to us.Maria Elisabeth was to have the use of the property, one room in particular, for the remainder of her life.  On her death the property was to go to Johanne Eleonore FAEHRMANN.  The homestead remained in the family until recent times. Christian was buried in the cemetery of the original church where his resting place is marked by a simple tombstone, which is still standing.

Maria Elisabeth's sister Anna Dorothea (Mrs. Johann Gottfried Erdmann KUCHEL) and husband and children, together with Daniel KUCHEL emigrated on the "Heerjeebhoy Rustomjee Patel" in the year 1845.  They settled near Hahndorf.  Daniel is listed as "grossknecht" of foreman.

Maria Elisabeth lived on in Hahndorf until her death at the age of 81 years on the 2nd August, 1879.  She was buried two days later by Pastor STREMPEL in the St. Michael's Church Cemetery:  her bearers were J.F. & J.W. THIELE, W. & A. SCHÜTZ, F.W. WITTWER, C. JAENSCH, C. MARKS and F. SCHNEEMILCH.  Her tombstone which matches that of her husband, still stands.

Buried at St Michael's original cemetery

These two headstones have been moved from their original sites & can be found in an area of the St Michael's Church car park, Hahndorf.

Authors Note:  In 1858 when Christian made his will two days before he died the witnesses to it were his eldest son Gottlieb b 1823, 35 years of age and younger brother Christoph b1825 aged 33 years and Reinder van der MOLEN b1824 in Holland, now aged 34 years of age & the husband of Gottlieb & Christoph's  first cousin Anna Dorothea LIEBELT (who he had only been married to for less than 1 year.)

No 1:  This original 1886 photograph [following Art Lab, Adelaide, conservation treatment], hangs downstairs in the Academy as you enter the museum display.   Liebelt Family History published in 1975, page 44, "Christian built his humble home of wattle and daub on this  property. It consisted of two  rooms and a porch...a cellar of similar construction was built somewhat removed from the house. Portion of this cellar still stands.  In the door of the old homestead was a spear mark where a spear struck into the door after an aboriginal had thrown it at Maria Elisabeth [KUCHEL] as she fled into the house."  Other anecdotal evidence regarding this spear throwing can be found in the article on Johanna Eleonore LIEBELT as well as sketches of infrastructure on this land.

No 2:  It is not known exactly when this stone house with the verandah on the footpath was built but it is believed to have been before Johann Friedrich Carl FAEHRMANN died in 1896.  Information from Beryl BENHAM & Alan REDDY indicates that it did not replace the original fachwerk house which remained on the block.  In the article regarding Nickolaus FAEHRMANN  I quote that with his father he built the house immediately along side 106 Main Street, around 1893c.  Perhaps they were built one after the other.

No 3:  As it looked in 2023 with leadlight windows, an usual double entrance door at the rear, and a verandah is built-up  to the footpath, on a deep sloping block, similar in size to all the others in Hahndorf in 1839. One of the 3 Hahndorf Creeks flows across the property about 2/3rds of the way down the block.

"These four photos are all of building on Christian LIEBELT's property."  "The gaps between the framework were filled in various ways.  Probably the earliest was to use wattlesticks or split pieces of timber.  These were fitted into trenches or small holes cut in the framework.  A mixture of mud and straw and the whole infill plastered over.  Sun-dried bricks were often used as an infill."

3.   Eldest son Johann Gottlieb LIEBELT marries LUBASCH

LIEBELT & Maria Elisabeth KUCHEL's eldest son, Johann Gottlieb LIEBELT, was 14 years of age on the 'Zebra' in 1838 & he grew up on this property for 9 years, from the age of 14-23 years when he married & became a farmer at Friedrichstadt.  For more specific information on this couple see the article about them and their 10 children.

Gottlieb in German means 'beloved by God'.  Johann Gottlieb LIEBELT's future wife, Johanne Karoline LUBASCH  [1827-1902],from Rissen, Brandenburg, Prussia, was an 11 year old on board the same vessel the 'Zebra'.  Rissen is now Rosin, Poland and is only 4.3kms through the fields to Nickern, or current day Niekarzyn in Poland, where Gottlieb grew up.

In 1847 they were married in the Schoolroom at Hahndorf by Pastor KAVEL whose mother Charlotte FILLGRAF, as explained above, was the oldest passenger on the 1838/9 ships ['Bengalee', 'Prince George', 'Zebra' & 'Catharina']

Author:  The witnesses to Gottlieb & Karoline's marriage were Gottlieb KUCHEL, probably Erdmann's youngest brother who had come out on the Prince George.   The LIEBELT's and the KUCHEL's were possibly already friends, from knowing them in Lochow, not  far from Nickern, or from their shared experiences in Hahndorf

I would never have believed such land to exist on the earth.’ Hahn arranged the conditions of the lease, which was signed on 28 January 1839. Some members of the Klemzig settlement, including Hoffmann, Jaensch, Kuchel and Liebelt, who had travelled on the Prince George, chose to settle with the Zebra community also.'

'KUCHEL 1838-1970' by V. SCHWERDT, G. HILL & E.A. WITTWER, 1970.
Johann Gottlieb, the fourth son of Johann Georg KUCHEL, was born in 1820.  He lived with his parents at Klemzig and Hahndorf, moving out with them to Kirchenbergen.  In 1848 he married Maria Elizabeth BARTEL.  They settled on land north of Kanmantoo, where he farmed for many years.  Later he became the proprietor of Wool Park Estate, near Kanmantoo. Gottieb was a devout churchman.  A number of families from Hanover, a State in Germany, had
FIEDLER, who was stationed at Hahndorf, came from Hanover, and he used to preach every three or four weeks at Callington.  Gottlieb often journeyed to Hahndorf in his German waggon and brought the Pastor back to conduct the church service.  The road was very rough and Gottlieb bought a spring cart so that Pastor FIEDLER would not be so shaken up on the way.  As a result he was given the title of Pastorfahrer (conveyor of the Pastor)
