Worked as a stockman and dam sinker before his marriage; then joined the SA police force in Adelaide and Pt Pirie, when he resigned and became a publican.

Between 1953-1955 worked at the SA Brewery, then the Royal Oak Hotel Torrensville then with his wife worked at a hotel in Quorn. Leased all hotels until buying the Murraytown Hotel – leased this business out until 1973 when they sold it to Karl Horst Diljonas, a builder who renovated the hotel extensively when he took over.

Detective in the SA police force before becoming a publican. Served in the AIF and became a prisoner of war on the Burma Railway. His health gave way and had to retire from hotels. Became a shopkeeper at Sefton Park
