Placed Nathan beer in his own bottles which he called dinner ale – 1/- or 11/- a dozen.
Used to walk the square mile for the good of his health every day – up the Red Road, right to the Echunga Road, down Pine Ave and then back along the main street to the Union Hotel.
People at Mt Barker used to ring the Union Hotel to warn if the police were on the way to check on 6pm closing at Hahndorf and Verdun. One of the policemen was a Koch – his son, Cyril Koch, a violinist with red hair played in drummer Miller Peake’s dance band. A lady was the pianist and her boyfriend Reg Stecker was the saxophonist. For New Year Eve, Miller Peake employed Max Nitschke as piano accordianist, Jeff Faehrmann as pianist and Freddie McCormick as . Miller Peake belonged to Premier Peake’s family and people loved to hear him announce when the next one of his big balls would come off.
Mrs Wallace was a good townsperson – used to run a bar for community functions, especially in connection with the formation of the Hahndorf Oval.
Three daughters – all married and stayed in Hahndorf

Missing Friends
Inquiry is requested for R. A. Murray, who went fishing on the banks of the river Murray, at Echuca, on the 2nd instant. Description:Scotch (supposed), about 35 years of age, 5ft. 10in. high, medium builds brown beard, whiskers, and moustache ; wore dark tweed suit, black boxer hat, and shoes with leather fronts and red cloth tops. He arrived from Sandhurst on the 31st ultimo, where he had been staying at the Shamrock Hotel. His fishing-rod and basket were found on a projecting log on the river on the morning of the 3rd instant. On the bottom of the basket is a label bearing the name of Scott's Hotel Melbourne, and addressed " R. A. Murray, Palace Hotel, Echuca.' It is feared he has fallen into the river, and has been drowned. Since the foregoing was written, circumstances have transpired which lead to the belief that the missing man has not fallen into the river, but has surreptitiously left the district. It is supposed he left wearing a light suit of tweed, which he put on inside of scrub alongside the river. Amongst his effects at the Palace Hotel was found a complimentary free pass on the Tasmanian railways for the present year ; it is made out in the name of R. A. Murray, Esq. His cheque-book shows that he left Tasmania on the 26th ultimo, and that he has an account as the Union Bank of Australasia, Latrobe. The river has been dragged for the body, but without finding any trace of it.-0.2126. April 7th, 1886
