Vitas was born in Germany 1948 to Latvian and Lithuanian parents.
Moving to Australia as a child he later studied art at the S.A.School of Art and graduated Western Teachers College 1968 as an art teacher.
He has headed various art/drama/music faculties in secondary schools, been a chief moderator/design for S.A.Board of Assessment and held chair positions on various country arts committees.
He currently teaches Art, English and Religious Studies at Heritage College Adelaide.
1972, He began exhibiting, having his first one man show at the Adelaide Festival of Arts.
36 Years later and a myriad of one man and group showings in South Australia and interstate his passion for art remains.
2009, First prize in the Rotary’s Port Adelaide and Maritime Themes Award.
Vitas brings visions to life on canvas or masonite, using acrylics applied in several layers, every layer being texturized and scratched to add depth.
Each work is a new opportunity for him to experiment and improvise.
Strong compositional elements are vital and always evident.
Vitas’ use of gold and silver leaf and strong symbols and delicate calligraphic asemic writing add mystery to each work.
Vitas quotes Kandinsky - ‘if we do not look long and with an open heart we shall see nothing but superior wallpaper’
