A private road, linking Kermode St and Pennington Tce.  The Pennington Tce end of Abbott Lane was formerly known as Abbott St.

Giles Abbott Senr (1781-1865) established the Queen’s Head Inn on TA 710, the corner of Abbott Lane and Kermode St, at least by 30 August 1838.  The hotel is believed to hold the earliest liquor licence in SA, and portion of the first premises survives.

GF Angas (1789–1879), of the original SA Commissioners.  A wealthy Baptist philanthropist, he resigned to became Chairman of the SA Company.  Angas personally guaranteed the fares of the first four boat-loads of German emigrants to SA, in 1838.

ARCHER ST NA - Town Acre 816 Sheet 98

One of the original public streets of Adelaide.  Alter name on the database.

Thomas Archer (1790-1850), well respected public servant in NSW and Van Diemen’s Land, who later became a prosperous businessman and pastoralist.  He presented Governor Hindmarsh with eight Merino sheep to aid SAs infant pastoral industry; hence, Hindmarsh’s insistence that Archer have an Adelaide street named after him.  T Archer’s daughter, Martha, married his long-standing friend William Kermode’s son, RQ Kermode.  W Kermode’s daughter, Anne, was engaged to Sir John Jeffcott, SAs first Judge, who drowned accidentally while crossing the Murray Mouth.  Thus, close family ties linked the naming of three well-known North Adelaide thoroughfares - Archer, Jeffcott and Kermode Streets.

Charles Hervey Bagot (1788-1880), pastoralist, parliamentarian and mine owner.  One of SAs most influential early colonists, CH Bagot used his stern belief in minimum government interference in affairs to promote private initiative.  He was the main backer behind development of the Kapunda copper deposits, and worked tirelessly for the colony’s eventual responsible government.  A large family of sons and daughters married well and many maintained their father’s interest in public matters.

JB Hack (1805-1884), an entrepreneurial Quaker, who purchased much land in Lower North Adelaide, an area he named Chichester Gardens, after his English birthplace.  Energetic in such diverse projects as agriculture, stockraising and shipping, Hack and his brother, Stephen, a partner in his business affairs, eventually lost their assets through bankruptcy.  Barton Tce, one of Adelaide’s original public streets, passes Hack’s former parcel of 13 Town Acre land grants.  He planted SAs first vines on this property.

Thomas Bewes Strangways (1809–1859), prominent pioneer SA explorer, pastoralist and politician.  Both Bewes St (South Adelaide) and Strangways Tce (North Adelaide) are named after him.  TB Strangways’ mother, Mrs Henry Strangways, of Shapwick Hall, Somerset, England, was the former Miss Elisheba Bewes.

Brothers Arthur (1823-1891) and Neville Blyth (1825-1890) conducted an ironmongery and general merchandise shop on the corner of Blyth and Hindley Sts during the 1840s.  Following political careers, both men retired to Britain at the end of the 1870s.

On lease from South Australia’s first Governor, John Hindmarsh (by then safely ensconsed as Governor of windswept Heligoland), WA Hughes laid out an extensive sub-division in North Adelaide, on three Town Acres between Archer and Ward Streets, during 1849.  The two new private roads through his estates Hughes called Marian and Boulton, likely to be the names of his mother, living in far-off Kent, England.  WA Hughes and his wife also called their children in similar fashion - after the youngsters’ Hughes and Sawle grandparents.

Jacob Bowden (1809-1888), pioneer colonist and medical herbalist.  He lived in Gilles St until 1882, serving a large practice amongst the district’s poor owing to the shortage of qualified physicians.  Widely, J Bowden enjoyed the honorary title of ‘Doctor'.  He died at home, Pine Cottage, Musgrave St, Goodwood.

BROUGHAM PLACE NA - Town Acre 740 Sheet 89

One of the original public streets of Adelaide.  A triangular road forming part of the link between North Adelaide and Lower North Adelaide.

Henry Brougham (1778–1868), barrister and MP.  He worked tirelessly for reform in common-law, commerce and education. Influential as Chancellor in Lord Melbourne’s administration, Brougham eagerly supported the foundation of SA during the early 1830s.

BROWN ST - Town Acre 693 Sheet 3

John Brown (1801–1879), early a supporter of the SA colonisation scheme.  He emigrated in 1837, and became the colony’s first Emigration Agent.  Urbane and well-educated, Brown quarrelled constantly with more pedestrian Governor Hindmarsh.  John Brown took an active interest in public affairs, helping to spread enlightenment through editorship of The Adelaide Times, for over a decade a rival of The Register for influence.

Brown St (one of Adelaide’s original public thoroughfares) was the continuation of Morphett St, from Grote St to South Tce.  From 27/7/1967, Brown St was re-gazetted as part of Morphett St.

William Bundey (1826-1889), master builder and Mayor of Adelaide 1883-1886.  Of extremely affable personality, W Bundey confined his civic interests to local government, Lodges and building societies.  He died unexpectedly, after supporting a toast, during a Methodist minister’s wedding reception in the North Adelaide Institute.  Mr Bundey lived in Mackinnon Parade, North Adelaide.

Thomas Buxton (1786-1845), first Baronet, MP for Weymouth (Dorset) 1820-1836, prominent in exertions for the abolition of slavery and the reform of the British penal code.  His grandson, Thomas Buxton, the third Baronet, became Governor of SA between 1895-1899.

William Cairns (c1828-1888), colonial civil servant. Undermined in health after spending most of his working life in Britain’s tropical colonies,  WW Cairns became Governor of South Australia in early 1877.  He resigned abruptly after two months in office, pleading a depleted nervous system as the reason for his sudden departure.  E Hodder notes that the opening of the Adelaide Bridge across the Torrens River (25 April 1887) appeared to be Cairns’s only public act.  Evidently, William Cairns failed to make his mark as one of the most popular of SAs colonial governors.

Edward Cardwell (1813-1886), barrister and parliamentarian.  He entered the House of Commons during 1842, in the years immediately following SAs foundation.  During the mid 1860s, as Secretary of State for the Colonies, Cardwell involved himself much with SA affairs.  He became Viscount Cardwell in 1874.

CARRINGTON ST - Town Acre 452 Sheet 32

One of the original public streets of Adelaide.

Robert Smith (1752-1838), banker and parliamentarian.  Elevated to the peerage as Lord Carrington during 1797, he became a close political associate of the Duke of Wellington.  Perhaps the Duke interested Lord Carrington in SA affairs, and caused members of his wealthy family to invest in the colony.

Robert Smith (1796–1868), MP for High Wycombe, at the time the SA Act was passed at Westminster.  He succeeded his father as the 2nd Lord Carrington during 1838.  Possibly a cousin to three Smith brothers, partners in the banking firm of Smith, Payne & Smith, in Lombard St, London, who purchased a swag of Adelaide Town Acres land grants in 1837.

Dr TY Cotter, the Colonial Surgeon, took up TA 144 as a land grant in 1837.  By 1839, he had laid out and named Chesser Street, after Captain William Chesser of the Ship Coromandel, on which the Cotters had emigrated to SA 1837.  Originally, Chesser Street was a right of way to the back boundary of the Town Acre; it has now become a public road linking Grenfell and Pirie Streets.

Club House Lane commemorates the Club House Hotel, which traded against the lane, on Town Acre 74, between 1839-1852.  The Club House Lane right of way served property belonging to the late Michael Featherstone, a Brighton farmer.  He left this part of his extensive estate to his second daughter, Hephzibah (Mrs John Kearne), who died in Lancashire, England, during 1879, aged 41, leaving a family of five boys and five girls.

Charles Crippen (?-3/11/1845), wholesale tea and coffee dealer, 8 Eastcheap ?, London.  Charles operated his business in partnership with one George Manton.  In private life, Charles Crippen lived south of the Thames - at 10 Glougall Grove, in the parish of St George’s Camberwell, Surrey.  Following his early death, his wife, Ellen, inherited his property, apart from a £25 annuity to his parents, Charles and Elizabeth Crippen, of Canterbury, Kent.  Ellen’s fellow executor was Charles Hope, of the firm of Watkins & Hope tea brokers, in the City.

In Adelaide, Charles Crippen owned Town Acre 54, on the corner of Hindley and Morphett Sts, behind Holy Trinity North Tce.  Under various names, the Century Hotel has traded on its Crippen Place corner since 1846, the year after Charles Crippen died.

Raikes Currie (), a radical wealthy banker and Westminster MP. sincere Anglican, he served on the SA Church Society for the proper establishment of church life in SA.  Currie remained well informed concerning SA affairs through regular letters from his great friend, Robert Gouger, until Gouger returned permanently to Britain in 1844.  Adelaide City Councillors drink an annual health to Surveyor-General William Light from a silver bowl which Currie helped to donate to the Corporation.  Currie St, one of Adelaide’s original public thoroughfares, early became a commercial centre through overflow of businesses from crowded Hindley St.

One of the original public streets of Adelaide.

Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), noted mariner, explorer and .  He first came to the South Pacific as midshipman to Matthew Flinders in the early 1800s, later returning to the region as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land 1837-1843.  Knighted in 1829 for his sterling achievements, Franklin perished while on his successful quest to find the North-West Passage in the Arctic.  Sir John’s wife, Jane, paid an extended visit to SA while the Franklins lived in Van Diemen’s Land, and is particularly remembered for her persistent efforts to equip an expedition to discover her husband’s fate.  Appropriately, one of Adelaide’s original public streets is named after this couple who took such an enlightened interest in SA.

Thomas Gilbert (c1787–1873), SAs first Colonial Storekeeper and Postmaster-General.  Probably the colony’s first optician, bachelor T Gilbert emigrated SA 1836 Cygnet, and was much in demand as an after dinner speaker at pioneer social gatherings.  Unlike many foundation government officials, he enjoyed immense popularity amongst the colony’s population, and retired with a liberal pension.

Osmond Gilles (24/8/1788-23/9/1866), SAs first Colonial Treasurer.  A childless widower of considerable wealth, Gilles gave up public office three years after he arrived in SA 1836 Buffalo.  However, his various commercial and philanthropic undertakings ensured that he remained well-known until his death.  Gilles lived on a prosperous estate at Glen Osmond.  Various SA locations named either Osmond or Gilles honour this uncertain tempered man.  This thoroughfare was designed for foot traffic only.  It formed a busy business centre with Rosina St, leading to Hindley St.

WE Gladstone (1809-1898), British parliamentarian and author.  When SA was founded during the 1830s, Gladstone was serving his first term as a Westminster MP.  He held government office as under-secretary for the colonies.  WE Gladstone’s name was put forward unsuccessfully as a SA Commissioner.  At one stage during the 1850s, Gladstone had to endure unpopularity, when one of his relatives, the youthful rake and gambler Francis Lawley, was proposed as the next Governor of SA following Henry Young.

Pascoe St Leger Grenfell (1761-1838), an MP, anti-slavery adovcate and father of Sir Francis Grenfell, a British Army general.  Active in his membership of the SA Church Society, Grenfell donated the Town Acre on which Adelaide’s first permanent church building, Holy Trinity North Tce, was erected, plus glebe land in the suburbs, which in time became known as Trinity Gardens.  His death, so soon after the colony’s foundation, robbed SA of sympathetic professional financial advice, for which he had been long respected in his devepment of the Anglesey and Cornish copper mining industry.  Pascoe Grenfell gave his name to one of Adelaide’s original public streets.

George Grote (1794–1871), Radical banker, MP and intellectual.  As Treasurer of the SA Association, it fell to him to promote SA as a desirable haven for emigrants and investments, after the President, Wolryche Whitmore, suddenly lost interest.  Grote himself also fell by the wayside during 1834, when he declared that Britain’s incoming Tory Government would interfere too greatly in finalising arrangements to establish the colony.

Richard Hanson (1805–1876), a leading member of London’s literary and political world.  He emigrated to SA after serving a stint as Secretary to Lord Durham, when the latter spent time in Canada to draw up his famous Report on the future of British North America. Interestingly, EG Wakefield, the architect of SA colonisation theory, was another companion on that particular trip.  In SA, Hanson campaigned earnestly for self-government, and became the colony’s Chief Justice in 1861.

One of Adelaide’s original public streets (a continuation of Pulteney St south of the Wakefield St intersection), Hanson St’s name disappeared in 1967, to be replaced by Pulteney St for the whole distance between North and South Tce.

Joseph Hawdon (c1813-12/4/1871).  Born Walkerfield, near Staindrop, Co Durham, England.  Emigrated to NSW in 1834, intending to play his part in the colony’s profitable pastoral industry.  Several years later, news of the foundation of SA filtered through to Australia’s eastern coast.  Inspired by reports of opportunities to sell livestock in the new colony, Hawdon brought the first overland draft of cattle during 1838, in partnership with Charles Bonney, whose exploration party moved ahead to define the best route, generally along the course of the Murray River.  Adelaide’s citizens greatly celebrated this effort.  Later, J Hawdon settled in Victoria and then New Zealand, where he prospered as a squatter until his comparatively early death.  Joseph kept in touch with SA through his sister, Mrs Francis Davison, of Blakiston, in the Adelaide Hills.

Charles Hindley, one of SAs founding Colonial Commissioners.  A Westminster MP, he campaigned fearlessly in the cause of religious equality.

4/12/1852  Bought Section 672 Hundred of Noarlunga, as a member of the Dukinfield Lodge, Ashton under Lyne, Lancs, £80.  He must have moved to Portland House, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancs, before shifting to London, to Dartmouth House, Dartmouth St, Westminster, where he died 1/12/1857.  In his will, he left Section 672 to his daughter Hannah, wife of Henry Woods, for life, and then to her children in equal shares.  Mrs Woods died before her father, Charles Hindley.  Her only other child, Caroline, died as an infant.  William Woods Junr inherited the land.  He was an executor of his grandfather’s will.  The other executors, including a Charles Frederic Hindley, declined to act as executors.  The firm of H & F Rymill solicitors dealt with the Section for many years for William Woods.  When William Woods married, he settled the land on his wife for life, then to his children in equal shares.

12/6/1932  William Woods died.  He provided that his executors should receive £200 each if they carried out their duties for over a year.  If they refused to act and were beneficiaries, they would lose their inheritance as well.  His son, Henry Charles Wood, and perhaps his sons-in-law, Henry Allan Appleton and Eustace Alpin Marshall, were trustees, along with the widow.

Sir John Lefevre (1797–1879), parliamentary under-secretary at the Colonial Office.  Sympathetic to the idea of forming SA, he smoothed the way for George Grote’s initial deputation to the Colonial Secretary, Edward Stanley, during eary 1834, on behalf of the SA Association.  Right until the bill for the colony’s foundation was ready for introduction to the House of Commons, Lefevre patiently kept together the negotiating parties.  Sir John enjoyed a long and distinguished parliamentary career, associated with many of Britain’s successful reforming movements.  Commemorated by a North Adelaide street, his name joins a select list of British government bureaucrats who helped steer the SA Act safely through to proclamation.

On lease from South Australia’s first Governor, John Hindmarsh (by then safely ensconsed as Governor of windswept Heligoland), WA Hughes laid out an extensive sub-division in North Adelaide, on three Town Acres between Archer and Ward Streets, during 1849.  The two new private roads through his estates Hughes called Marian and Boulton, likely to be the names of his mother, living in far-off Kent, England.  WA Hughes and his wife also called their children in similar fashion - after the youngsters’ Hughes and Sawle grandparents.

The original Marlborough St formed part of the White Estate.  Was Mrs John White, nee Barbara Willingale, born in Marlborough, Wiltshire?  A Supreme Court Order of 10/7/1900 forced the White Estate Trustees to surrender land to bring Marlborough St to its present proportions and to lay out Blenheim and Churchill Sts as public roads on other portions of the White Estate.

A cul-de-sac, leading west off Pulteney St, just south of Rundle Mall.

Thomas Martin emigrated to SA 1839, probably aboard the ship Planter, with his wife Mary, nee Fiveash, and brother Henry.  Almost immediately, T Martin established himself as a Hindley St butcher and became one of the best-known of SAs earliest colonists.  Gradually, he purchased prime real estate between Leigh St and Pulteney Sts, which brought in a lucrative income from rents.  During the mid-1850s, the Martins returned to England, but continued to take a great interest in SA.  When Thomas died in 1898, he left his Adelaide freehold land to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in trust, together with a handsome cash gift, to be shared with the Children’s Hospital.  Martin Place forms a right-of-way through perhaps the most valuable of the Martin properties - Town Acre 86 - on the corner of Rundle Mall and Pulteney St.

To SA 1837 South Australian.  Employed by the SA Company in designing McLaren Wharf, Pt Adelaide, the first wharf erected in the colony.  Later, a member of the Adelaide City Council, the SA Parliament and the Main Roads Board.  A farmer and flour miller, Henry also served as a special magistrate.  He took out TA 760, North Adelaide, as a land grant

One of the original public streets of Adelaide.

Extended in name on 24/7/1967.  Name now applies to the former Hanson St as well.  Name change gazetted 27/7/1967.

Pulteney Malcolm (1768-1838), an Admiral of the Royal Navy.  He served with Nelson in the Mediterranean 1804-1805, and in many other parts of the world, at a time when Britain’s empire was expanding rapidly.  From the start, Malcolm took a decided interest in SAs founding and strongly supported fellow naval officer John Hindmarsh as the colony’s first governor.  Pulteney and his three brothers, natives of Scotland, became known as The Knights of Eskdale, because they all received knighthoods.

As one of Adelaide’s original public thoroughfares, Pulteney St’s name applied originally only north of the Wakefield St intersection.  The name change notice to apply for the present length between North and South Terraces appeared in the Government Gazette on 27/7/1967.

Saxmundham is a market town north-east of Ipswich, Suffolk.  By the middle of the 1800s, it had become the postal address and railway halt for Thebarton Hall, an estate where Adelaide’s surveyor, Colonel William Light spent much of his boyhood.

Edward Stanley (1799–1869), 14th Earl of Derby, scholar and statesman.  He became celebrated, when Irish Secretary, for his parliamentary clashes with Daniel O’Connell, a passionate Irish patriot, at the time SA was being planned in the early 1830s.  Both men are commemorated in the naming of original North Adelaide public roads.

Charles Sturt (1795–1869), British explorer, soldier and public servant.  Preferring the Great Outback to Sydney’s personality clashes when he was appointed military secretary to the Governor of NSW, Sturt received permission to chart the courses of that colony’s inland rivers.  Amid many hazards, Sturt’s party discovered the Murray River during 1830 and traced it to its exit into the Southern Ocean.  Between the late 1830s-1850s, Charles Sturt worked in the SA public service, but eventually retired to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where he died.

Edward Surflen (), Port Adelaide customs officer and Reedbeds farmer, one of SAs foundation colonists.  He bought Adelaide Town Acre 487 as a government grant.  The private street which bears his name crosses this Acre and also No 526 to give access between Carrington and Halifax Sts.

7/403  11/4/1890  Thomas Adair Masey Esquire barrister Inner Temple, London, but temporarily of Adelaide (Eliza Wild’s solicitor), Eliza Wild widow Ramsgate, Kent, England and Emily Surflen of the Reedbeds, widow of Amadis Surflen farmer formerly of the Reedbeds.  Emily Surflen bought for £600, the southern moiety (40 acres) of Section 451 Hundred of Yatala, formerly known as Section 451 in Provincial Survey B; also Edward Surflen’s moiety share in Section 450, Hundred of Yatala. Section 451, which he bought from the Section grantee David Beatton on 9/2/1841.  Both lots of land belonged to Edward Surflen.

Amadis Surflen farmer Reedbeds died 23/5/1860 intestate.  His father, Edward Surflen Senr Esquire Margate (St John the Baptist parish Isle of Thanet), Kent, England, inherited at law.  He died 20/10/1870 leaving his widow Elizabeth Surflen his real estate for life.  After her death, the property to go equally to his two daughters, Eliza Wild, the wife of John Wild and Mary Ann Gee widow Summer Hill Harbledown, near Canterbury, Kent, England.  Elizabeth Surflen died 16/8/1877, John Wild died 15/6/1870.  Mary Ann Gee widow of John Gee gent, died 28/8/1880, of diseased liver and diarrhoea, aged 70, leaving her share in the property to her sister Eliza Wild for life, and then the property to the beneficiaries, her 4 cousins, after some minor bequests to friends and her god child, indicated in her will.  Western moiety (25 acres) Section 2075, Hundred of Yatala; his moiety in Section 450, and lot 4 in Section 441 facing southern side of Old Port Road (present-day Royal Park) and west of Tapley Hill Road (26/2/1855 from Osmond Gilles £60).

Edward Surflen Captain died 16/10/1881 ‘a bachelor without a parent’, of senile atrophy, aged 77.  His surviving sister Eliza Wild inherited at law.  Emily Surflen bought both brothers’ land for £700.  The legal firm of Knox, Gwynne and Hargrave (Windsor Chambers, Victoria Square) used to attend to Edward Surflen’s affairs.  His sister-in-law Emily Surflen carried on a business as a grazier without any active part on Edward Surflen.  Until 11/4/1890, Mrs Surflen carried on her business as a grazier.  The trustees of Mary Ann Gee’s will wanted to sell her share of the estate to raise enough money to fulfil the bequests in her will.  Eliza Wild and the four cousins must have waived their rights to ownership and dispatched all the land.  Applications 22006/22007.s

Whiteman Freeman, the master of the Tam O’Shanter, which arrived in SA during 1836, bought Adelaide Town Acres 153 and 154 from JB Hack and his wife, Bridget, during September 1838.  By this time, Freeman had taken up residence at Danbury Park, near Launceston, in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), probably as a pastoralist.  He divided the two sections into two separate sub-divisions of 25 allotments each, linked by a private road he called Tam O’Shanter Place, after the ship he had captained to South Australia.  When W Freeman sold the last of his sub-division in the mid-1850s, he had returned to Britain for retirement at Syderstone, Norfolk, England.

A cul-de-sac, leading off King William Rd, as the entrance to Adelaide Oval.

Victor Richardson (1894-1969), one of Australia's cricketing heroes.  He played Test cricket for SA, and is perhaps now best remembered as the grandfather of the Chappell brothers.  Richardson played both Test cricket and League football on nearby Adelaide Oval.

Princess Victoria (1819-1901), heir apparent to the British throne at the time SA was founded in 1836.  She succeeded her uncle, William IV, in the following year, as Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria (1819-1901), to date the longest-reigning British monarch.  Although she never visited SA, one of her furthest-flung possessions, the various Governors and Premiers throughout her reign kept her in touch with events there.  Until the 1860s, this street was called Kyffen St, a family name associated with Robert Thomas, the grantee for TA 51.

Daniel Wakefield (1798-1858), economist and barrister.  A brother of EG Wakefield, he drafted  the Bill upon which South Australia was founded, to satisfy the new Colonial Secretary, Robert Gouger. He also had hopes of becoming the first judge in SA, but lost interest after his brother severed links with the colony.

Sir Henry Ward (1797-1860), MP for St Albans at the time SA was founded.  Unsuccessful in nominating as one of the SA Commissioners, nevertheless, he supported the passage of the SA Act through the Westminster Parliament during 1834 and belonged to the SA Association.  Later, Sir Henry became a colonial governor in the Mediterranean and the British Indies.

Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), to whom Robert Gouger appealed successfully for help in guiding the South Australia (Foundation) Act safely through the British Parliament.  Wellington recommended one of his Peninsular War commanders, William Light, for appointment as the colony’s first Surveyor-General.

John Wright (), London banker, SA Commissioner.  He had TA 471 as part of his preliminary land grant holdings.

One of the original public streets of Adelaide.

Woolryche Whitmore (), one of the earliest British MPs who promoted SA ‘as affording another outlet for the superabundant capital and population of Great Britain’.  He broached the idea to Colonial Office officials and headed the SA Association, which had its headquarters in Adelphi Terrace, London.  In 1834, when the relevant government bureaucrats had decided on the colonisation details, Whitmore had the honour of introducing the SA Bill to the House of Commons, ‘where it passed the third reading without any serious hindrance’.

John Wright (), one of the original SA Commissioners appointed in 1835 to oversee the foundation of SA.  Was he the banker in partnership with EW Jerningham?  They went bankrupt in 1840.  Wright bought land in SA, which his friend JH Fisher used and later laid out the township of Bowden upon.
