At about 10:30 p.m. on May 4, 2015, a 20" gas transmission line operated by Consumers Energy located in a wooded area near the corner of M-52 and North Territorial Road about five miles north of Chelsea, Michigan exploded.  About 20 people reported a sound like a jet crash. There was no fire at the scene and no injuries reported. Some nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and sheltered at Lyndon Township Hall. Chief Jim Payeur of the Chelsea Area Fire Authority had "no clue" why the pipeline ruptured, and said that a crew from Consumers Energy was working on site. The scene has been cleared and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.
