Route 1U, Pontiac--University, is one of the AATA's University routes, providing extra rush-hour service between the University of Michigan campus and Medical Center and residential areas at the edge of town; it resembles somewhat a blend of the regular-service 1 and 2 routes.
The 1U route starts at Food Gatherers on Dhu Varren Road. Leaving the Carrot Way development, the route heads west on Dhu Varren to Pontiac Trail, which it follows south 2 miles (3.2 km) to its end at Swift Street. From there it follows Swift, Broadway, and Maiden Lane to the Medical campus. 1U circles the medical center, following East Medical Center Drive, Observatory, Geddes Avenue, North University Avenue, Fletcher Street, Huron Street, Glen Avenue, and Fuller Road back to Maiden Lane, then returns to Carrot Way by Maiden, Moore Street, Pontiac, and Dhu Varren.
The route, runs four times in the morning between 7 and 8:45 and four in the afternoon from 3:45 to 5:20; run time is about 25 minutes. The 'Pontiac University' runs only on weekdays, and does not run during the week between Christmas and New Years and other times when the University is closed.
