4-week delay totals in minutes, June 1-27 2008, blanks caused by a lack of data

The Amtrak Train Status History site collects historical information about delayed Amtrak trains, at least 5 days and up to three weeks worth of information.

One common source for delays of west-bound trains to Chicago are freight trains in Indiana on the Norfolk Southern line from Michigan City to Chicago. If the westbound Amtrak trains are not precisely on time heading west, they miss their schedule window and are often delayed an hour or more. The situation is exacerbated by a busy crossing on the south side of Chicago where nearly 150 trains a day have to pass through a single crossing. In 2010, $133M in Federal funds were awarded to the "Englewood Flyover" project to disentangle this bottleneck, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This project will take approximately 3 years to complete, but will substantially reduce Amtrak delays on the Michigan routes.

The Amtrak Route Performance pages detail causes of delays.
