Charles C. Chapman is the author of "History of Washtenaw County, Michigan" (Chas. C. Chapman & Co. Chicago, 1881) with sketches of its cities, villages and townships and biographies of representative citizens.

During 1876-77 he was hired to canvas for a local historical work in his native county. During 1878 he started his own historical work under his own name and as the Chapman Brothers after his brother, Frank M., became a partner. The firm name was later changed to the Chapman Publishing Company.
