Douglas D. Downing (Jul. 10, 1938 - Jul. 11, 1975) was an Ypsilanti Police Department patrolman killed in the line of duty while responding to a bank robbery at the Park Street branch of the National Bank of Ypsilanti.

Patrolman Douglas Downing was shot and killed after responding to a holdup alarm at a bank on Michigan Street and Park Street. As Patrolman Downing entered through a rear door he encountered a suspect who was fleeing the bank. The two struggled and Patrolman Downing was shot and killed. Another officer shot and killed one of the three suspects and the other two were apprehended.

Police said Howard Hughes III, 29, appeared in a special weekend session before Ann Arbor District Court Judge Thomas Shea but no bond was set and no plea was entered.
