Fielding Yost, photo from 1928 Michiganensian via WikipediaFielding Harris Yost (Apr. 30, 1871 – Aug. 20, 1946) was the head football coach at the University of Michigan (1901–1923, 1925–1926), and Athletic Director from 1921 - 1940. His coaching record at Michigan was 165–29–10, with ten Big Ten Conference titles and six national championships. As A.D., he oversaw the construction of Michigan Stadium, Yost Ice Arena, and the University of Michigan Golf Course.
He is credited with coining the phrase, "Football builds character" and initiating the pronunciation of the school's name as "Meee-chigan."
Yost was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
