Manufacturing mecca fallen on a quarter century of hard times; birthplace of the UAW in the 1930s.
Flint is an hour north of Ann Arbor on US-23 in Genesee County; the city currently has a population similar to Ann Arbor's, down from its peak at twice that size. Ann Arborites tend to have a rather low view of Flint, when they bother to view it at all, but major steps towards the recovery of downtown Flint have been made in the past few years, and the coffee shops along Saginaw Street, such as the Lunch Studio and Brown Sugar Cafe, are nearly as full of college students with laptops as any cafe in Ann Arbor.
Flint is home to University of Michigan - Flint and Kettering University.
