Fourth Ave Sleep Shop was adjacent to the Fourth Avenue Birkenstock shoe store. It offered mattresses and pillows, specializing in the Tempur-Pedic brand. Owners Paul and Claire Tinkerhess introduced Tempur-Pedic products to the Ann Arbor area in about 2002 by offering them in their shoe store. When the former Hall's Barber Shop space north of the shoe store became available in 2004, they turned it into Fourth Ave Sleep Shop, showing the full range of Tempur-Pedic mattresses and pillows together with organic sleep products from Natura. By 2009, Tempur-Pedic had grown rapidly, was sold by several other businesses in town, and had expanded its offerings beyond the Sleep Shop's space limitations. The Tinkerhesses discontinued the Sleep Shop in 2009 and expanded their shoe store into its space, offering an expanded selection of Birkenstock and other brands of footwear, together with a selection of clothing.
