Inspired by Cuban culture and a fantasy revolving around two culinary staples in the world of Cuban street food – The FRITA – a burger traditionally made from spicy chorizo served with shoestring fries on top in a soft egg bun and BATIDOS – tropical milkshakes made with fresh fruit, crushed ice, and sweetened milk – with or without rum.
Like burgers and shakes, Fritas and Batidos are a natural pairing and the whimsical menu is the result of dreaming about these two dishes for years! Although Frita Batidos is very casual, it is vitally important to us to maintain the highest standards and aspirations for taste, quality and creativity. The menu follows the seasons and many of the key ingredients will be sourced from local farmers and purveyors.
We strive to source our meat, cheese and produce from Michigan or the Mid-West whenever possible. This is an ongoing quest and something personally meaningful to us, so if you have a favorite local, humane farm or purveyor, please point us in their direction – It will be greatly appreciated!

My husband and I stopped in for lunch. I ordered the Beef Frita, a beef patty on a brioche bun with sweet chili mayo and topped with fries; I added a slice of Muenster cheese as well. I also chose a strawberry flavored tropical soda. The burger was on the small side, but very juicy and flavorful. The shoestring fries on top of the burger was a change for me, but I enjoyed them. They were still soft and full of potato flavor. The sweet chili mayo was delicious, but not especially spicy. Despite the high quality of the ingredients I did find the overall value a little low at $9 for an small elevated cheeseburger that didn't include anything else.
Last week, I went to Frita Batidos with some friends/co-workers for lunch. The space is casual, with white picnic tables and some bar-style seating at the window. The old Cafe du Jour space has been renovated from the tiny cozy lunch room into a contemporary casual white box. Really, it's quite casual, and really, quite white, and really, quite boxy (well, rectangle-y).
The aesthetic of Frita Batidos is sort of like modernist picnic-chic - ice blues and white dominate in a space filled with clean lines and tables you'll remember from summer camp. It doesn't scream Cuba, although the colors are a little Miami. For a morning pick-me-up I ordered a Chocolate Español and churros, making the mistake of asking for "churros con chocolate" as though I actually was in Mexico D.F. Oops. But they were delicious, the chocolate thick and rich, perfect for dipping with the orange, cinnamon, and nutmeg spiced churros.
While eve the restaurant won the first round, her other dream comes true on Tuesday, Dec. 7, with the opening of Frita Batidos at 117. W. Washington in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor.
Eve Aronoff reveals that her new restaurant, Cuban-inspired Frita Batido, will be at 117 W. Washington St., the location of the former Cafe du Jour in downtown Ann Arbor, the Michigan Daily reports.
Aronoff, who already owns the restaurant Eve on North 5th Avenue in Ann Arbor, will be opening her second venture by July 1, 2010 in the space formally occupied by Café du Jour on West Washington Street.
