Gifts of Art brings the world of art and music to the University of Michigan Health System. One of the first and most comprehensive arts in healthcare programs nationwide, Gifts of Art’s mission is to incorporate the arts into the environment of care in order to help calm and bring comfort to our patients, visitors and staff. Gifts of Art programs utilize the arts to assist and enhance the healing process, reduce stress, support human dignity and renew the spirit.

Exhibit Galleries: Our rotating galleries display over 50 exhibits a year. Some of the finest artists in the region display their artwork in spaces that are viewed by approximately 10,000 people a day.

Gifts of Art does an annual Call for Entries to select artwork for the exhibit galleries. In addition, Gifts of Art hosts an annual Employee Art Exhibition that offers health system faculty and staff an opportunity to display their creative works. To purchase a piece of art on exhibit with Gifts of Art, please call 734-936-ARTS (2787).

Public Performances: Weekly performances in music, theater and dance take place in the University Hospital Main Lobby or the Courtyard in the summer. They showcase the best of local and regional talent as well as touring international performers.

Art Cart: Volunteers take colorful carts filled with framed prints to patient floors in the University Hospital and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and offer patients their choice of artwork to display in their rooms.

Friends Meditation Garden: Restorative gardens have had a presence in hospitals since the Middle Ages as places of comfort and hospitality. Our garden was designed to provide a natural and peaceful space for patients, visitors and staff.

Music While You Wait: Talented volunteer musicians, in our main lobby and other waiting areas, provide a pleasant diversion during difficult times for patients, families and staff.

Bedside Music Program: Specially trained musicians bring live music to the bedsides of patients to help calm and comfort, reduce stress, manage pain, and provide respite not only for patients, but also for their families and caregivers.

Life Sciences Orchestra: Performing two free concerts a year at Hill Auditorium, the LSO is made up of doctors, nurses, staff and students in the health system and related life sciences departments at U-M. This symphonic orchestra was founded to provide a performance outlet for faculty, staff and students while building a community and sustaining the creative spirit.

Artist in Residence: Gifts of Art collaborates with Artists in Residence on participatory arts projects with our patients and staff. The origami-like Dragon of Wishes, Hopes and Dreams, the Art Gallery Coloring Book and art making workshops are a few examples of how artists bring engaging art projects to patients, families and caregivers.

Permanent Art: The U-M Health System is filled with art. Many of the permanent art pieces have become treasured friends. They are intended to engage and delight viewers for years to come.
