The Rev. Gustavus L. Foster, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Ypsilanti, wrote a history in 1857 of The Past of Ypsilanti which focused on the history of various churches in the area.

Foster was a regent of the University of Michigan from 1850 to 1852.
