James Monroe Walker (1820-1881) was the president of the Chicago, Burlingon and Quincy Railroad from 1870 to 1875. A graduate of the University of Michigan in 1849, he studied for the bar exam and was admitted to practice as a lawyer in 1850. Walker formed a firm with George Sedgwick, the first mayor of Ann Arbor, and the two left for Chicago in 1853.

Walker served as an attorney for the Michigan Central Railroad before joining the Chicago Burlington and Quincy. He amassed considerable power in Chicago throughout his years there, having control at various times of the Union Stock Yards, the Kansas City Stock Yards, and the Wilmington Coal Company.
