Obituary

Katherine Terrell Svejnar, 59, passed away unexpectedly on December 29, 2009 in the Dominican Republic. She was born January 1950 in Washington D.C. and raised in various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Katherine was an economics professor at the Ford School of Public Policy and the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. A generous and admired colleague to faculty and staff from around the University of Michigan, Katherine was an influential and respected scholar as well as a dedicated teacher and mentor to graduate students. She was an expert on the impact of government policies and the effect of globalization on wages, employment, income inequality and firm performance in emerging market economies. Her research and teaching had a direct impact on the lives of people in the poorer parts of the world, particularly in countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America. Despite her health problems, Katherine courageously carried on a demanding professional schedule that many would have found daunting. She was married to Jan Svejnar, who is also a professor at the University of Michigan. The two collaborated on several academic journal articles, books and other research. In addition to her research, Katherine consulted with many international organizations, including the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Prior to coming to U-M in 1996, she taught at Cornell University, where she received her Ph.D. in 1984, and subsequently at the University of Pittsburgh.

The family has spearheaded the creation of The Katherine Terrell Svejnar Endowment Fund for International Education, jointly held by the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. The Fund will provide support for graduate students doing economic development work. The University President's Donor Challenge for the Student Global Experience will match all gift s to this fund with $1 for every $2 donated.
