Levi Douglas Wines (b. 1852; d. August 06, 1938)

Beloved mathematics professor at the high school, he was also a local builder, a founder of the University Musical Society, and of the Ann Arbor Parks Commission.

Some of our citizens complain about the three or four thousand dollars we put into parks each year, and never complain about the half million or more we put into liquors, cigars, tobacco, courts, and jail at the same time. When will we cease being consummate fools! What egregious fools we are, to allow a small portion of our community to exploit the youth of our land for a few paltry dollars! (1914)
