Students working at the League cafeteria got a free meal with their three-hour lunch or dinner shift. It wasn't fast food, or even dormitory cafeteria food, but rather an actual entree (sole, beef bourgogne, chicken kiev, etc), a salad (you had to pile it into the tiny alloted dish, but the supervisors were lenient), steamed vegetables, dessert, and either juice or soda. An actual meal. Although it did have to be eaten in the dungeon-like basement area, with its stinking smoking section, surly full timers, overall sewer smell, and Major Havoc game calling for quarters.

An interesting dynamic obtained upstairs in the dining room proper: cloth napkins, minimal "point of sale", general neighborliness. Many professors were regulars.
