Timeline

  • On August 16, 1972, the Ann Arbor Board of Education named Patricia J. Winner the interim principal of Newport School.  Winner, who was paid at a daily rate based on an annual salary of $21,255, received the B.A. from San Jose State College in 1958 and the M.A. from Columbia University in 1966.  Her teaching career began in East Orange, NJ.  In 1966, she moved to Ann Arbor and began teaching at Dicken Elementary School.  In 1970–71, she was supervisor of elementary teachers at the University of Michigan, after which she returned to teaching at Dicken.  Former principal William Mays was appointed assistant superintendent for curriculum implementation.  (From Ann Arbor News archives.)
