Notten is a settlement at Notten Rd north of Old US-12 W in Sylvan Township. It is located at the extreme western edge of the township, and postal addresses on Notten Road are served from the adjacent Jackson County post office of Grass Lake.

Section 19 of Sylvan Township was farmed by William Notten (b. 1839, New York City; d. December 1881, Sylvan Township) who owned "350 valuable acres" in the area. After his death, his widow Caroline Notten (nee Artz) continued the operations of the farm.
