What do you know about Red Towers? When driving down Washtenaw Avenue just East of Carpenter Road, you can't help missing the property at 4500 Washtenaw on the South side of the road with a large pond and two tall metal towers. I have often wondered what these towers were and why they were put up on apparently private property. In 2015, the Ann Arbor Observer reported on a question about them (https://annarborobserver.com/articles/red_towers_on_washtenaw.html#.YDUgoJNKii4) which provides and explanation. In 1950 Charles Gault (Ypsilanti High Class of 1924) created the pond and erected the now-rusted towers. Charles had a passion for shortwave radio and from his basement radio room he communicated with radio operators from Russia to the South Pole.
