Boman, Richard W. 11/25/1927 - 12/3/2015 Ann Arbor Richard W. "Dick" Boman, 88, of Ann Arbor, MI passed away peacefully Thursday, December 3, 2015 at his home with his wife and daughter by his side. Born in Saginaw, MI, he was the son of the late Earl W. and Emily Fox Boman. On August 6, 1954 he married Betty Hagen at Bethlehem Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ann Arbor. Mr. Boman was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served from 1946 until 1951 in Japan and Arizona where he earned the Army of Occupation Medal Japan and the World War II Victory Medal. He often described his time in service as "getting paid to play" as he had been the football coach for the US Air Force team in Japan, and played on the softball team. His interest in sports carried into adulthood when he played softball for many years in Ann Arbor. Mr. Boman was also an avid golfer, having played regularly at Brookside Golf Course. He enjoyed making golf clubs and custom putters and was embedded in the history of Pat's Par Three, which is now Miles of Golf. Mr. Boman, along with his father, built the miniature golf course there some years back. Later in life, he and his wife became members of the Pittsfield Seniors and enjoyed taking many casino bus trips with the group until he became ill. Mr. Boman really enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. After his time in the service he worked as a bricklayer and then went to work as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. He left the USPS and went back to his job as a bricklayer before returning eventually to the USPS main post office and retiring as a postal clerk in 1988. Following retirement he worked as a postal clerk at Georgetown Gifts. In addition to his wife of sixty-one years, Mr. Boman is survived by two children, Nancy Boman Gotham (Greg) and Jack Boman (Sandee); his grandchildren, Kelly Gotham and Brian Gotham, and Bruce "Rich" Boman (Abigail) and Elizabeth "Beth" Boman, and their mother, Valerie Boman; his siblings, Larry Boman (Evelyn) and Waneta Sorge (Mike); and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Vernon, Duane, Don and Sherman. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor with the Rev. John Kennedy officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
