Description: Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers (CLAIM) provides legal and educational services to maintain the bond between imprisoned mothers and their children. CLAIM advocates for policies and programs that benefit families of imprisoned mothers and reduces incarceration of women and girls. We strive to (1) promote community-based sentencing instead of prison for non-violent offenses, particularly for primary-caregiver parents; (2) promote family preservation, and (3) empower women former prisoners to work toward policy changes. Our geographic service area for representation is Cook County only; for advice and referral on Illinois Family Law matters only. Stipulations: Parent is incarcerated, or has been. Client may be the parent or proposed guardian of the child (with consenting parent). We primarily serve parents in correctional centers. Volunteer Opportunities for attorneys.
