1837, the Village of Attica was incorporated but it wasn't until 1866 that the first mention of a fire department would reach the Village Board. The board decided to organize a Bucket & Ladder Fire Co. for the village.
In the mid 1800's on the west side of Water Street, where the firehall currently stands, a Village Municipal Building was constructed to house the Village Office, Fire Department, Jail, and other meeting rooms.
In June of 1877 the Village Board decided to look into acquiring fire fighting equipment. On the August 28, 1877 board meeting it was voted on to spend $750 to purchase this equipment.
On September 13, 1877, the Wyoming Hook & Ladder Co. #1 was organized 25 men strong with Harry Hall elected first foreman and Lewis Benedict the first President of the Company. They operated a carriage house and parlors on the corner of Main and Water Streets. At some point this group changed its name to Attica Hook & Ladder Co. #1.
On March 6, 1878, the Rescue Engine Co. #1 was organized by the help of Andrew G. Krauss. In the late 1870's to early 1880's this group purchased a $600 engine for the Rumsey Fire Equipment Co. of Seneca Falls, NY. This hand pumper, which came to be called the "Pride of Attica" is still owned by the department today. The engine house they utilized is in the located the current department is on Water Street.
July 26, 1878 the Wyoming Hose Co. #1 was formed as an independent volunteer fire company. This group had its parlors on Market Street and was fully uniformed like a city department. This group had 900 ft of hose and a hose cart the was purchased from the Columbia Hose Co. #XI from Buffalo, NY. The cart was built in North Buffalo in May or June of 1868 and is still owned by the department.
These three companies, the Attica Hook and Ladder Co. #1, the Rescue Engine Co. #1, and the Wyoming Hose Co. #1, operated independent of each other but were all member of the Attica Fire Board.
Spring 1904 the charter for the Rescue Engine Co. #1 expired and it was not renewed.
April 20, 1904 the Maplewood Hose Co. #1 was formed.
February 16, 1922, just before 10:00pm a fire was discovered in the basement if the Attica School on Prospect Street where the current elementary school is located. The School board President at the time and another used a hose line in the front hall to extinguish the fire, but the fire had spread to the attic area through a vent shaft and the structure was doomed. At that time Arthur Underwood and Milton Meisner had climbed to the roof. Arthur was halfway down a long extension ladder and Milton at the top when it broken sending both to the frozen ground. Milton was rushed to a Batavia hospital were he died at the age of 21. In the long history of Attica fire fighting only 1 member has died in the line of duty, Milton Meisner.
1922, the three companies decided to combine to better serve the community.
April 12, 1923 a charter was granted for the Attica Fire Department Inc.
1953, the Village bought the Barnes Blacksmith Shop to the North of the Village Hall and construction on a new municipal building began.
February 28, 1954 the new municipal building was dedicated.
1967, an addition to the north side of the municipal building in a large meeting room on the 2nd floor and a fire truck bay on the ground floor.
1977, a wall on the ground floor was removed between the truck bays and FD meeting room to give more equipment space.
January, 1996 the building of station 2 was started after the Fire Department had purchased a small piece of land on Main Street near Georges Drive from the Village. The building is 36 ft x 40 ft and has two 14 ft door. The building construction cost about $80,000.
