Biography


Parmenio Adams was born in Simsbury, Connecticut. He married Eleanor Wells on October 23, 1795 and they had four children before the family moved to Phelps Settlement or the early Attica region in 1806.

From 1806-1816 Parmenio served in the New York State Militia under many titles, lieutenant of light infantry, captain of grenadiers, second and first major, and division inspector of infantry. He was active during the War of 1812 on the Niagara frontier as Major, division inspector of infantry, and commandant of the New York Volunteers.

1815-1816 Parmenio was Sheriff of Genesee County and again from 1818-1821.

1822 Parmenio ran for the 29th districts U.S. House a Representative for New York position. Isacc Wilson was declared the winner by a small margin. Parmenio contested the election showing that the returns had been certified mistakenly and Parmenio was seated in the 18th United States Congress under the Democratic-Republican ticket.

Adams was reelected on January 7, 1824 to the 19th United States Congress and held the office until March 3, 1827.

Adams also ran a gristmill and was a construction contractor on the Erie Canal.

Parmenio passed away in Alexander at the age of 56 and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery
