Stores
Many people in Austin shop for groceries at stores owned and named after the San Antonio-based HEB. The same company operates Central Market.
Whole Foods is native to Austin, with several stores here.
Several smaller independent grocery stores and specialty stores exist, including:
- Wheatsville Foods Co-Op, a natural foods co-op
- Rabbit Food Grocery, a vegan grocery store
- Asahi Imports, a store selling exclusively Japanese items
- MT Supermarket, an independent Asian market
Note that there exist CVS stores in Austin that are not open 24-hours. (The downtown CVS on Congress is one notable example.)
Shopping
Austin used to ban single-use plastic grocery bags. The city ordinance was in effect from March 2013 to July 2018, when Texas Supreme Court ruled single-use carryout bag bans were not permissible under the state constitution. However, many shoppers in Austin still use reusable bags, and most stores sell reusable bags at checkout registers.
