Passenger Service

There is no passenger railway service to Baton Rouge. However, nearby New Orleans is a major passenger rail destination with service to Chicago and the coasts. Search the Amtrak website they advise taking the 8058 Bus from the Baton Rouge, LA - Bus Stop (BTR) Curbside Bus Stop only (no shelter) 1253 Florida Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.

After Hurricane Katrina, there was discussion of establishing passenger train service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. However, this idea seems to have fizzled in favor of the LA Swift BR-NO shuttle bus.

Freight Trains

Flickr Photo by Tobin Fricke Baton Rouge does receive freight service from several railroads, including:

  • Kansas City Southern connects baton rouge with New Orleans; with Kansas City via Shreveport LA; and with Mexico (see the KCS route map).
  • Union Pacific (UP)
  • Canadian National (CN) connects BR with New Orleans (Mays Yard) and with Memphis and points north.

Presumably most of the freight traffic through BR serves the local petrochemical industries.

Disasters

There was a famous Livingston Train Derailment in 1982 in which a train derailment spilled many toxic materials in Livingston.
