Issues of Focus

  • Alleviating child hunger in Blacksburg
  • Alleviating weekend and summer hunger for children
  • Community Development
  • Community Food Security
  • Community Health

Programs:

  • Micah's Backpack:  partnering with 9 Blacksburg schools, Micah’s Backpack provides direct food assistance for children from low-income families. Every Friday during the school year, the identified students receive a backpack filled with two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, snacks, juice and milk boxes, and an educational piece.
  • Micah's Mobile Backpack: Micah's Mobile Backpack delivers weekend food to children via a food pantry on wheels. This is typically done during the summers when the bags can't be delivered to the schools. Educators often accompany volunteers and may also include a mobile library.
  • Micah's Garden: Micah's Garden grows fresh produce for Micah's Caring Initiative programs. Half of the garden is used for the programs and the other half of the garden is rented out to lower growers who either keep their produce or donate it to the programs.

  • Micah's Closet: Micah's Closet gives a week's worth of new school clothes, pajamas, shoes, socks and a jacket to children in need.
  • Micah's Soup for Seniors: Micah’s Soup for Seniors hopes to bridge a food gap which exists for many senior adults surviving on limited, fixed incomes. Micah’s Soup for Seniors invites all members of our community who care about alleviating hunger for elders to join in the fun of helping others.
