A hardware salesman who moved from New England to the Bay Area in 1862.

He built his residence on Bancroft Way in 1877.

He was an influential resident who was credit with bringing major civic advances to Berkeley. First he convinced the Central Pacific Railroad to build a branch line to Berkeley. He was instrumental in securing a line of credit to launch Berkeley's first successful publication, the Berkeley Gazette. And finally he was an important figure in securing electric lighting for the city.
