Basics

Constitution Trail is a joint venture between the City of Bloomington and The Town of Normal. Approximately 37 miles of trail exist within both Bloomington and Normal. In 2000 the Constitution Trail was designated a Millennium Trail by The White House Millennium Council.

The original segment of the trail was placed over an abandon segment of The Illinois Central Gulf Railroad line, which provided an appropriate pathway for a trail.  Although some members of the community had apprehensions, the railroad tracks were removed, and the first part of the trail was laid.  Initially, the trail covered 4.3 miles.

It is completely free and can be used for hiking, jogging, walking, bicycling, and other leisure activities. There are parks and rest areas along the trail and they can be used for picnics and family events. This trail was made possible and is maintained by both the City of Bloomington and the Town of Normal. The trail was opened on May 6, 1989 and was created in celebration of the 200th birthday of the United States Constitution The trail features the Camelback Bridge in Normal, a site on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.. The trail was expanded in 1997 due to increased usage. The trail is opened daily one hour before sunrise and closed one hour after sunset. Keep yourself safe, and do not be on the trail past dark, to prevent accidents, as well as the slight (but possible) chance of a violent attack in the dark. Motorized vehicles are prohibited except for emergency and maintenance vehicles.
