History

BroMenn Medical Center was started in 1894 by five physicians with $500 each. These doctors came together to open what was named "Deaconess Hospital" in 1896. This hospital grew quickly and a larger hospital, Brokaw Hospital, named after contributor Abram Brokaw, was created. At the same time, the Brokaw Nursing school was also established (History)

In 1919 the Mennonite Church came together and opened a second hospital in Bloomington, which became the Mennonite Hospital and College of Nursing.

These hospitals became the for-runners in medicine; Brokaw Hospital was the first hospital in the area to have a CT scanner, a hospital based chemical dependence unit and psychiatric care unit, cardiac rehabilitation unit, neurosurgery, birthing rooms, and a separate pediatric unit. The Mennonite Hospital was the first to do corneal transplants, hospital-based long term care, hospice, adult day care and wellness programs, home health care, and pastoral care and education.

In July of 1984, Brokaw, Mennonite and Eureka Hospitals came together to from BroMenn Healthcare, and Brokaw Hospital was renamed BroMenn Medical Center.

Eureka Hospital is still a well-known example of a rural hospital.

Mennonite Hospital has since closed, and the College of Nursing became Illinois State University's sixth academic college in 1999.

BroMenn Medical Center has continued to bring modern technologies to Central Illinois, with clot-busting medications for stroke treatment, a sleep disorder lab, electrophysiology for irregular heartbeats, a wound care center, new treatments for chronic pain, stress echocardiograms, newborn hearing screenings, and electron beam tomography for early detection of heart disease (History).
