Headquarters Fire Station

  • Costing $450,000 the station was opened in September of 1981. In 1990, headquarters was added on to, which moved suppression personnel to the north end of the building and created more space for administration and prevention on the south end of the building.

Headquarters houses the offices of the Chief and Assistant Chiefs, the Battalion Chief, as well as the Prevention Division. Having a total of 20 firefighters that are on the job, only seven work here. This station is also equipped with a full training room, complete with audio-visual equipment and video library.

Safe Place

Normal Fire Department is one of the many fire departments that is a "Safe Place". Safe Place is an agency directed towards youth that are in need of help. The department has a diamond shape sign that is yellow and has black lettering that says Safe Place located somewhere on the outside of the station. It is usually on the front of the station in front of the garage doors that keep the fire trucks and engines.  The station serves as a safe place for youth to get the help they need and feel protected by those are who paid to protect us.

Trucks & Engines

Each fire stations has some type of fire engines or fire trucks and a ambulance

                                  Headquarters

Housed at Normal Headquarters is Engine 13, Truck 14, and 3-Nora-13. Both Engine 13 and Truck 14 seat 6 firefighters. This would be the driver (also known as the engineer), passenger (command) seat, and 4 back seats for the front line firefighters. Both also have a computer near the passenger (command) seat. This computer is used to give 911 call information such as location, detail about the call. What makes Truck 14 different from Engine 13 is that it has a huge ladder on the top of it called an aerial. This ladder can go as high as 10 stories. It also has a water gun called a deck gun that is used for high range and high height fire attack. 3-Nora-13 is the ambulance. It can seat 2 paramedics. The back of the ambulance can seat a patient, another paramedic, and has a bench for extra seating of two. The ambulance has almost everything that a hospital would have. It's simply a hospital but on wheel.

Work Shift

  • Being a firefighter is a highly demanding job. From physical and classroom training, to being called out any time during the day and night, it is very use for them to get tired. They are human and need a break just like everyone else. Firefighters work 24 hours and get 48 hours off. This gives them time to be at home with their families since they do live at the fire station for those 24 hours. It’s important to remember as well that firefighters don’t get to take holidays off like everyone else. Also, that firefighter who wants to go to a celebration or a child’s concert is not easily able due to the demand of the job.

Employment

  •  In order to become a firefighter, you must meet these requirements:

-Must be 21 by date of test.

    -Must be U.S. Citizen.

-Must have High School Diploma or GED.

  • You will have to undergo a background check as well as a polygraph test.

  • A successful Fire Fighter/Paramedic applicant must possess a valid State of Illinois Paramedic License or a National Registry Paramedic License at the time a tentative offer of employment is extended.  Once an offer of employment is extended applicants must immediately obtain EMS System Certification to be employed.  Applicants without a Paramedic license should be enrolled in, and have significantly completed, a Paramedic training program before testing with the Town of Normal.

  • Normal Fire Department is one of many departments that require you to become a paramedic. For those who just want do paramedic or just do firefighter, you have to be both. This is to better serve the Normal community.

Special Team

The Normal Fire Department has a Technical Rescue Team. Technical Rescue response can include confined space incidents, trench or excavation collapses, high- or low-angle rope rescues, structural collapses, or transportation or industrial accidents involving heavy vehicles or equipment beyond the scope of a typical fire company's capabilities.  This team would also be involved with the aftermath of large storms like the tornado that hit Washington, IL. As of now, Normal Fire Department has 25 personnel that are on this team. Each firefighter must attend several trainings to keep up with their certification.
