The Normal Theater is a unique attribute to the newly designed and remodeled “Uptown” Normal. Its overall design and age make it a great historical building full of character and charm that makes for a great attraction. Created on November 17, 1937 to “show sound movies in the best comfortable environment”, this theater provides a completely different atmosphere from any of the new other theaters in Bloomington-Normal, including cheaper tickets ($6), foreign films, old films, and an overall different feel for the building’s appeal. The theater opened in 1937 and was closed down in May 1990 after being divided into two different screens. Luckily, the Town of Normal bought it, to hopefully make it profitable again, unlike the fate of many other small town theaters. With the huge efforts of Normal’s restoration team, the theater was restored back to its original glory and charisma. With an art deco and “state-of-the-art” design, coral seating, blue and silver high lights, maroon walls, high-modern aisle lights and lit ceilings of multi-colored neon, movie goers will be overwhelmed by the endless excitement the modern, yet old style designing. Between the outside lights, the ticket booth, the usher, and the concession counter, the magical feeling of an authentic retro theater is obvious and prominent in the Normal Theater and will give movie goers a feeling they felt as a kid growing up going to the movies.
