The first Steak ‘n Shake was founded right here in Bloomington-Normal! It was established in February of 1934, in a spot right across from what is now Advocate Bromenn Medical Center. The restaurants founder, Gus Belt, pioneered the concept of premium fresh burgers and authentic milkshakes.

The original location of the first Steak 'n Shake is now a Monical's Pizza, seeing as though a flood ruined the building while it was Steak ‘n Shake and it has since been rebuilt as such.

For over 80 years, the company's name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word "steak" stood for STEAKBURGER. The term "shake" stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of the slogan, "In Sight It Must Be Right."

The charming interior of Steak ‘n Shake will remind the customer of a classical diner. From the black and white checkered floors to the classic bar stool seating and booths. Not only will the interior allow the more mature customer an old fashioned experience, but the kids can too. Kids menus are full of brightly colored pictures and activities all styled around the sock-hop era. Kids can also put together and play with a 50s style car!

Steak ‘n Shake remained a Midwestern exclusive and treat until only recently when the restaurant chain expanded west.

In some cities, you can find this charming diner open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week!

Not only are the Steakburgers fresh, but the hand-dipped milkshakes are made of entirely fresh ingredients as well. No prepackaged powder like some restaurants use.

The personable wait staff is always knowledgeable about the menu, as they are asked to try and memorize it, and happy to converse with customers. They also make it extremely easy to split the check when there are multiple parties, as the orders are grouped according to individual customers. There is also no waiting for the server to come back with your change, as they hand you the check and the customer can walk up to the counter and pay it at any time.

The Steak 'n Shake menu has an abundance of delicious options but there is a cult-favorite that is not listed on the menu. Ask for a 7x7 and you will receive seven patties and seven pieces of cheese between two buns for only $7.77!

Steak ‘n Shakes have also added the option to add a flavoring to your already delicious soda. For instance, one could order a cherry flavored sprite or vanilla flavored coke. But drinks aren’t the only item on the menu with renewed flavor choices. Since it’s opening in 1934, Steak ‘n Shake has come up with many different ways to serve up a Steakburger.

After 80 years, they are continuing the tradition of serving the country's best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes.
