Volunteering at Advocate Bromenn Hospital
My intention of this Local Wiki page is to inform people of our community about the opportunity we all have to do a great thing with our free time.
Our opportunity to volunteer.
Volunteering comes with many benefits. Volunteering will benefit hospitals, patients, doctors, nurses, staff and, very importantly, you.
One does not realize all the work that needs done inside a hospital until you have had the pleasure of helping one function. Besides providing patients with awesome care, there are so many things to do behind the scene that volunteers are able to help with. If we as citizens can make someone else's job easier, I strongly believe we should put forth effort in doing so.
While volunteering a shift at the hospital, which is usually 2-4 hours and once or twice a week, you will be able to see how much of a help you are to the medical center. As a volunteer, you have different options on where you would like to help out the hospital.
Listed are some areas around the medical centers where volunteers are placed...
Progressive Care Unit
Mother and Baby Unit
Valet Parking
Front Desk of the Main Atrium
Gift Shop
and so much more....
There is an area to volunteer in for everyone. Most older men like to do valet parking. Teenage boys help out where they can carry heavy things. A lot of women like to do the gift shop. Most teen girls prefer to progressive care unit and mother baby unit because they spend a lot of time walking around. Everyone has their preferences and the hospital's volunteer services try their best to place the volunteer in the unit they would enjoy most.
Duties while volunteering vary by position. Volunteering at the valet parking of course will be different than volunteering at the mother baby unit. In progressive care the volunteer will stock patient cabinets with things for nurses and doctors uses. In the gift shop, the volunteer will help people shop and buy their things. If you're working the front desk, you will be answering phones and giving directions to people around the hospital. A lot of the time a volunteer at the front desk will have to walk people where they need to be, so make sure you're ready to move around. In the mother and baby unit the volunteer does a lot of the thing they would do while helping in the progressive care unit. Basically the volunteer in these units will be ready to help out nurses and patients whenever need be. No matter what position you have a volunteer, you can bet that you'll be interacting with great people. Whether they be patients or hospital employees.
You will have a dress code while volunteering. Men wear green vests over white shirts and khaki pants. Women wear pink smocks over white shirts with some kind of long skirt or khaki pants. You also must have your volunteer ID with you and attached to either your smock or vest. Your ID will have a picture of your smiling face, and an identification number to enable you to clock into the computers to keep track of the hours you've spent volunteering.
Volunteering looks great on resumes and applications. Volunteering at a hospital like Advocate BroMenn will also give you a feel for the health field and can even lead you into a career path. You will meet great people all while having a gaining a great experience.
After your shift you will truly feel as if you have just made someones life easier. You will be so happy that you spent 2-4 hours of your day helping, and I promise you will be happy to help again.
To begin volunteering at Advocate BroMenn, you will have to have a physical and a TB test. Flu vaccines are also required for volunteers. Flu vaccines are offered throughout the fall for free for volunteers.
