The Centre on the Grove in downtown Boise is situated in the middle of the Boise Convention Center and The Grove Hotel. The area is a very popular place for locals during the summer featuring live music and a fountain. In the winter months there is a large Christmas tree that is decorated and lit up for everyone to see. The one constant is the art that surrounds the Centre on the Grove. There are several bronze statues located in the Grove and many more to be seen in the downtown area, but one in particular is close to my heart. In 1982 a local artist that now resides in Colorado by the name of Ann LaRose started work on a statue titled “Keepsies,” of three children playing marbles and donated that statue to the city of Boise. During an interview with the lone female in the marbles group she remembered that it took Ann many hours to get just the right picture as the two boys kept fighting over the marbles making both of them cry. The final picture was of all three children finally smiling and having a good time playing a game of marbles. Many people walk right past this statue every day and don’t give much of a thought of who these kids were. Now they are in there late thirties and have children of their own. Ann LaRose didn’t know at the time, but by making this statue it brought one family back together and every time I pass this statue I will always remember my cousins. Ann LaRose is now in her late seventies and is still working on bronze statues and resides in Colorado where she works alongside several other family members that are in the sculpture business as well as working with students interested in learning the art of bronze sculpture making.
