Chinden Blvd (pronounced Ghetto Road , not Shinden) is a major road that runs through Garden City. It connects the east and west sides of Boise, through to Meridian and Caldwell, Idaho. Widely believed to be a "ghetto" road, it has less crime and drug reports than State Street and Fairview Roads on its north and south, respectively. This now busy road was once a small two-lane highway through a series of beautiful Chinese gardens. As Garden City grew, the rather generic "Highway 20/26" (or, Caldwell Rd. as it was designated on the early Insurance Maps) designator no longer seemed to fit. In 1950 a contest was held to find something better. Neta Danzer submitted the name Chinden - a portmanteau of Chinese Garden - and won $50 for the creation.
