Gene Bleymaier was the second longest seated Athletic Director for Boise State University.   Gene joined the athletic department in 1981 and became the Athletic Director in 1982.   The stadium's unique playing surface can be credited with Gene since he needed to replace the field surface and wanted to bring national attention to the university.   Gene decided to install the 'blue turf' in 1986.   In 2011 Gene was fired by the university for what some would consider petty charges by the NCAA.
