Richard C. Adelmann (b. May 1846) immigrated to the United States from Germany as a child in 1854. Enlisting in the Union Army in 1862, Adelmann fought in many major Civil War battles, such as Antietam and Gettysburg. He was honorably discharged after receiving an eye injury due to a gunshot wound to the head. He moved to Boise in 1872, opening a saloon on Main Street. He was also a miner and volunteer firefighter. In 1875, Adelmann married Emma Ostner, daughter of Charles Ostner, who carved the George Washington statue on exhibit in the Idaho State Capitol Building. The couple had two children. After the death of Emma, Adelmann married Julia Ostner in 1882 and had four more children. Richard Adelmann was described as having “sterling characteristics ever commanding for him the high regard and warm esteem of those who know him.” He died in 1933.
