Information about the Organization

The Lettuce Learn team is made up of students, teachers, administrators, and dirt lovers of all sorts.  The Lettuce Learn seed was planted by Courtney Baines Smith out of her passion for gardens, farms, food, and education.  As a sustainability student and educator at Appalachian State University, she was granted many opportunities to learn from and be inspired by phenomenal folks doing amazing things in the soil with their hands, heads, and hearts.  She learned that with creativity, love, and an eagerness to learn, all things are possible.  Lettuce Learn support teachers, child care professionals, and school leaders to create edible landscapes for learning, by providing help where they need it most:  staff, training, and resources.

Services

  • Training: Garden-Based Professional Development: Lettuce Learn partners with ASU’s Reich College of Education and Sustainable Development Department to offer a summer professional development opportunity for local teachers and child care professionals. We offer Professional Learning Communities (coming soon) and other professional development trainings upon request. Contact Us to find out more.
  • Resource Sharing Network: In addition to providing staff and training, the Lettuce Learn Project connects school gardens to the community by creating a strong, easily accessible network of school garden support.  In Fall of 2015 this website will feature an interactive on-line visual diagram where interested parties can easily find the local resources they are seeking.  Teachers can post if they have a school garden need-- from an agricultural guest speaker to a truck full of compost.  Individuals, nonprofits, and businesses can post their particular skills/talents/supplies that they’re willing to donate to any school garden of their choice.
  • Additional Services: Tool lending library, Seed-sharing, Garden-based education literature library, and a PreK garden-based curriculum framework

Ways to Participate

  • Help in investment levels such as planting a school garden and maintaining a school garden
  • Donation: $25 provides hand-picked "thank you" flowers to a teacher, $50  provides seeds and seedlings for a fall garden, $100 provides a set of tools to help maintain a school garden, $250 brings a farmer to a school to share their agricultural wisdom with the next generation, or $500 Supports a Cooking Demonstration and Cooking Cart (partnership with Chefs Move to School). Benefits: Your name, company name or logo will be included on our donors page and through social media outlets.  Your dollars will help transform our schools into places where food security can begin and garden-based education can thrive. Thank you for your support. All donations are tax deductible and will be processed by Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture.
